Until recently, most SNA research has been conducted without any reference to the spatiality of the networks under examination. The inclusion of space and its effects is relatively new and a growing concern in SNA research. The spatial dimension of social networks is however mainly assessed through the geographic location of actors/nodes and the distance that separates them. While spatial propinquity is likely to affect the probability of a tie, this relates to physical space conceptualised as isotropic. Or, in many cases, social networks that are embedded in geographic space characterized by its anisotropy and its homogeneity. Besides distance, there are other spatial effects that are likely to affect social interactions like boundaries and limits or functional spatial systems (“territories”), spatial heterogeneity/inequality or place attributes (“sense of place”). This session aims to bring together contributions that question the spatiality of networks and address the inclusion of different spatial and territorial effects in the analysis of social ties.

Registration for the conference and membership is provided by INSNA.
Abstract submission is organized by the local organizers.
